The DriveAFM which launched 12/2020 is resulting in the first publications from happy customers. The photothermal actuation, built into the DriveAFM, enables key techniques such as CleanDrive, WaveMode, and PicoBalance. The PicoBalance technology is showcased in a hot-off-the-press Nature Communications publication, where total mass measurements are demonstrated on yeast cells for the first time.
Dominik Ziegler, CEO
With an increasing number of installed DriveAFMs, we look forward to seeing many inspiring publications emerging from the various scientific communities that enjoy using our high-end products.
We continue to experience a high demand for industrial solutions for quality control in the manufacturing of high-end optics or semiconductor products.
About one month ago Nanosurf turned 25 years old. We are excited to celebrate our anniversary with you by organizing a scientific symposium on October 6th in Basel followed by an open-door day where you can get a look behind the scenes in our headquarters in Liestal. Make a note of the date and look forward to an unforgettable event.
We are relieved that despite formidable challenges in the global supply chain, we have been able to prevent extensive shipping delays for all our products. With a new management team we look forward to the opportunities and are ready to face future challenges. Nanosurf is rapidly growing, if you would like to join our team, please have a look at our open positions.
Yours,
Dr. Dominik Ziegler, CEO

Picogram-level mass measurements with millisecond time resolution
Video: Setting up a PicoBalance experiment
All over natural sciences and engineering mass is being measured to characterize and design a large variety of high-performance systems. Yet there existed an instrumentational void for weighing microscopically sized systems such as single cells or colloidal microparticles.
With the recent introduction of the PicoBalance option for the DriveAFM, Nanosurf now offers a unique solution that allows nanotechnological measurements of a new dimension to fill this gap - while providing the full functionality of a high-end AFM.
Since its introduction several users are already exploring the capabilities of the PicoBalance to non-invasively measure microscopic biological or material science systems at picogram and millisecond resolution.
Mass resolution: 5 pg*; range: tens of pg to tens of ng
Time resolution: 100 ms*; range: from seconds to days
Long-term stability enabling day-long experiments
Compatible with LiveCell chamber, inverted light microscopy, FluidFM and DriveAFM

Nanosurf has a special birthday this year - and we are set to celebrate! In 1997, two physicists and an electrical engineer from the University of Basel decided SPM instruments are too cumbersome to use, and that they should not require their own room to operate. So they went out and built the first STM that could fit comfortably on a coffee table - with room for a couple of cups of espresso to spare.
While we haven't forgotten our roots, we have come a long way since this first technology innovation. We are no longer a startup serving a niche market - Nanosurf is now striving for market leadership in the premium market for AFM instrumentation.
To honour our history and collectively set our minds on the future, we would like to mark this quarter century with an Anniversary Symposium and the opportunity for friends of Nanosurf to look behind the scenes at our Liestal Headquarters.
If you want to come to Basel to celebrate with us, please let us know by clicking above - this will help us with planning a memorable event.
Nanosurf`s next generation DriveAFM was installed at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi. With this, Prof. Nitya Nand Gosvami became the first researcher in India to operate a DriveAFM. Prof. Gosvami's group will use the DriveAFM predominantly for their research focused on nanoscale tribology and nanomechanics of lubricants, thin films and 2D materials.
DriveAFM installed at WavesAudio in Israel
Gabriel Zeltzer at WavesAudio in Modi'in oversaw the installation of his DriveAFM this month. The system will be used for topography and nanoelectrical measurements (KPFM and CAFM) to study composite materials.
Two CoreAFMs were installed at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
The first went to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in Be'er Sheva, in the group of Assaf Yaakobovitz. It will be used for nanomechanical measurements of 2D materials.
The second CoreAFM was installed at the same university, in the Department of Materials Engineering. The user group is planning to use nanoelectrical modes to study peptides and nanomechanical measurements to investigate polymers.
